A year ago today, Russia launched an unjustified and unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainians have valiantly resisted and beat back this brutal assault.
But the world has also seen the deadly consequences of the absence of American leadership on the global stage. On the heels of the shameful withdrawal from Afghanistan, President Joe Biden’s policy of appeasement failed to deter Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine.
The Biden Administration must immediately do what is necessary to support Ukraine while implementing the robust oversight mechanisms Republicans in Congress have been demanding.
Fears of escalation are understandable, but true escalation will come when an emboldened Putin moves on to his next target. What happens in Kyiv does not stay in Kyiv. Enabling the defeat of Putin’s assault on Ukraine is necessary to deterring Xi Jinping from attempting to conquer Taiwan.
American strength and deterrence are critical to safeguarding our way of life. As the war enters its second year, the United States once again faces a test of global leadership. Our adversaries in Beijing, Tehran, Pyongyang, and Moscow are all watching.
