Last weekend, two Iowa National Guardsmen and an American interpreter were killed with three other Americans wounded in an ISIS ambush in Syria. We mourn those who were lost and extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, while praying for the full recovery of the injured who remain under medical care.
This attack follows closely on a deadly assault in the heart of our nation’s capital that targeted members of the National Guard. Together, these acts of violence, spanning from distant battlefields to American soil, underscore the enduring and adaptive threat posed by radical Islamic extremism and the need for unwavering resolve.
For more than a decade, Operation Inherent Resolve has significantly degraded ISIS’s leadership, resources, and operational capabilities. Yet these recent attacks make clear that the threat to our servicemembers and our country persists. This is no moment to relax our vigilance or weaken our deterrence, particularly amid heightened global instability.
Despite these tragedies, we are heartened by the news that Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe has been released from the hospital. His recovery stands as a testament to the resilience of those who serve and a reminder of our responsibility to remain steadfast in confronting the dangers they face on our behalf.
