Celebrating 250 Years of the U.S. Navy

Dear Friends,

This week marks 250 years since the birth of the United States Navy, a force that began as a fledgling fleet of converted merchant ships and has since become the most dominant maritime power the world has ever known.

When the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a naval force in 1775, America had no standing fleet and few sailors trained for war. But what our early Navy lacked in resources, it made up for in resolve. From the Atlantic to the Caribbean, American sailors fought for independence with courage and cunning.

Over two and a half centuries, the Navy has grown from a handful of ships into a global force capable of projecting power, deterring aggression, and ensuring the free flow of commerce on every ocean. From the USS Constitution to the carrier strike groups of today, the U.S. Navy has stood as a guardian of liberty not only for America, but for the entire free world.

The Navy’s unmatched strength lies in the sailors who over generations have answered the call, men and women who serve with integrity, honor, and courage. Their commitment has carried our nation through wars, crises, and moments of transformation, ensuring that America remains secure and that freedom endures.

As we celebrate this milestone, Veterans on Duty honors all who have worn the uniform of the United States Navy. From the sailors who fought for independence to those who stand watch today across the world’s seas.

Here’s to 250 years of service, sacrifice, and unmatched excellence. Fair winds and following seas.
