This week, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission released its 728-page annual report detailing how the CCP is preparing its population and military for a potential war with the United States over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and disputed territory near Japan.
“China has continued to rapidly advance its capabilities to launch a successful invasion of Taiwan,” the report states, citing expanded operations around the island and new forces trained specifically for amphibious invasion. These developments allow the CCP to shift from a training exercise to a blockade or invasion with little to no warning.
The report’s findings are not surprising, but the urgency of the threat should remind Washington that we must strengthen our defenses, reinforce our alliances, and bolster our deterrence. America must be prepared to confront adversaries who may test our determination.
As in past conflicts, we may not choose the fight, but we must have the resolve to finish it. That means expanding our defense budget, accelerating innovation to equip the warfighter, and securing strong deterrence that gives the United States and the service members who defend it an unfair advantage in any fight.
