Dear Friends,
President Trump’s State of the Union Address honored several American servicemembers whose actions embody service above self.
Take USCG Petty Officer 3rd Class Scott Ruskan, whose first rescue mission was responding to historic flooding in Texas in July 2025. Ruskan didn’t blink at the sight of high waters, he worked tirelessly to save 165 victims from the flood. For his exceptional conduct he was awarded the Legion of Merit.
President Trump acknowledged two other heroes, CW5 Eric Slover and USN Captain Elmer Royce Williams (Ret.). Slover, a Chinook helicopter pilot, led the charge in Operation Absolute Resolve to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Despite sustaining four wounds to his leg and hip, he refused to yield — continuing on to complete his mission. Capt. Williams, a fighter pilot who served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War — flew over 220 missions during his career. Over Korea he fought a seven-on-one dogfight against Soviet MiG-15s, where he shot down four enemy aircraft despite sustaining over 200 hits to his own jet. For their valor, CW5 Eric Slover and USN Captain Elmer Royce Williams (Ret.) were recognized with America’s highest military commendation — The Medal of Honor.
The President also honored two members of the West Virginia National Guard, Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. While on patrol near the White House, both Wolfe and Beckstrom were shot in a terrorist attack. Beckstrom, tragically succumbed to her injuries, while Wolfe has fought for his life in the hospital and continues the road to recovery. Their sacrifice has undoubtedly deemed them fit to receive the Purple Heart. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sarah’s family and friends.
These heroes represent the very best of our nation. Their courage and sacrifice remind us that freedom is sustained by ordinary people who chose to do extraordinary things. We remain grateful for their service, and honor those who stand watch on behalf of us all.
