Today, Jeremy Hunt, Chairman of Veterans On Duty and a former U.S. Army Intelligence Captain with a deployment to Eastern Europe, issued the following statement regarding the Pentagon’s decision to reduce U.S. troop presence in Romania:
“The Pentagon’s decision to scale back America’s military footprint in Romania—a key NATO ally on the front lines of deterring Russian aggression—undermines President Trump’s policy of peace through strength, risks weakening NATO’s ability to defend its eastern flank, and relieves some of the pressure on Putin to negotiate peace with Ukraine. At a moment when deterrence and resolve are needed most, retreat signals hesitation. The United States should be strengthening its forward posture, not scaling it back.
As Russian drone attacks on Ukraine grow in ferocity and Moscow’s threats toward our allies intensify, now is not the time for America to ease its guard. In recent weeks, Russian aircraft have violated the airspace of Romania, Poland, and Estonia—clear warnings that the threat is both real and immediate. Our response must be steadfast support for our Eastern European partners and an unwavering commitment to deterrence.

Mike Rogers in urging the Pentagon to explain its rationale and ensure that U.S. and allied defense posture remains strong, unified, and consistent with President Trump’s vision of peace through strength.”
