Dear Friends,
Last week’s tragic killing of a National Guard member and the shooting of another in the heart of our nation’s capital blocks from The White House is a solemn reminder of the dangers our service members face both at home and abroad. Our thoughts remain with the family of the fallen and with the Guardsman who remains in critical condition.
This attack underscores significant shortcomings in our vetting system following the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan under the Biden administration. The United States must urgently reinforce the vetting processes that were weakened, leaving officials without the tools necessary to properly evaluate those entering the country.
While the United States has a profound responsibility to support the Afghans who stood beside our forces, that commitment must begin with rigorous, comprehensive vetting.
Our national security depends on ensuring that those seeking refuge or a pathway to citizenship meet the standards necessary to keep Americans safe and contribute to our nation’s future success and prosperity. As we mourn the loss of this brave Guardsman and hold the other in our prayers, Veterans on Duty remains steadfast in advocating for stronger policies that honor their sacrifice, reinforce our national security, and help prevent future tragedies.
