250 years ago, fifty-six ordinary men signed their names to a document that changed the course of history.
They declared something the world had never seen fulfilled — that freedom is not a privilege granted by kings. It is a right belonging to every person, no matter who you are or what you do. Our founding fathers also understood that governments exist to serve the people, not the other way around.
They were right. And every generation of Americans has since proven it.
From Lexington and Concord to the Battle of the Bulge. From the mountains of Korea to the streets of Fallujah. To this day, over one million Americans have sacrificed their lives to protect the promise made in Philadelphia on this day in 1776. Those heroes did not do it for a king, a party, or even a President. They did it for the idea that freedom is worth fighting for.
Every day the American experiment has been tested by war, division, and doubt, but it has persevered against all odds, every single time.
Today we celebrate 250 years of that perseverance. 250 years of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the name of freedom. 250 years of the greatest country the world has ever seen. We are not perfect. We never have been. But no nation in history has worked harder to live up to its own founding promise, the cause of liberty and justice — and no nation has paid a higher price defending it.
On this Independence Day, Veterans On Duty honors every man and woman who has ever worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Because of them, the promise holds.
